Rotterdam East Corps Weekend 2007
The Amsterdam Staff Band weekend of 29th and 30 th September was held at
the Rotterdam East Corps. For the concert on the Saturday evening featured two top brass soloists from the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra: Hendrik-Jan Renes (tuba) and Andre Heuvelman (trumpet). For this concert former bandmaster Howard J. Evans returned to the Netherlands once more to conduct the band. Click here to read more

Promoted to Glory: 'Major' Bosshardt - June 30, 2007
'Major' Bosshardt died on Monday, June 25 at the age of 94. The funural took place on Saturday 30th of June. The Amsterdam Staff Band and Amsterdam Staff Songsters did have an important role during the funeral. Visitors were not only Prime Minister Jan-Peter Balkenende, dutch celebrities like Henny Huisman, Jos Bring, Frits Barend, Maartje van Wegen but also homeless people and prostitutes. Ending of the season 2006/2007 (Barbeque) - June 19, 2007
On Tuesday June 19 the ASB held an informal evening to conclude the season of 2006/2007. Traditionally with a barbeque, partners of the members and the Salvation Army staff. Leandra Bosma, Pieter Koopmans, Harri Smit, Sebastiaan Nieuwland and Major Germen Stoffers received the ASB charter to thank them for being a member of the band.
Music Festival 2007 - May 12, 2007
Saturday 12th May 2007 the Music Festival of the Salvation Army in the Netherlands, which is held every year together with songsters and bands from serveral corps in the Netherlands, the Amsterdam Staff Band and Amsterdam Staff Songsters, took place at 'Muziekcentrum Vredenburg' in Utecht again. Special guests this year were the King's Singers from the United Kingdom and cornet soloist Derek Lace, cornet player of the New York Staff Band. One of the large works the ASB performed was In Primis, a test piece written for Amsterdam Staff Band by Alfred Willering. This piece will also be on the new CD.
Songster Weekend - September 9, 2006
On September 9, 2006 the ASB was guest at the Songster Weekend that is held every year. Special guest was the well known Salvation Army composer Kenneth Downie and his wife. After the workshops the band gave an informal concert in the evening with Kenneth Downie, where the band performed some of his pieces. A terrific experience for the ASB to work with this musician.
Ending of the season 2005/2006, Barbeque- June 27, 2006
On Tuesday the ASB held an informal evening to conclude the season of 2005/2006. Traditionally with a barbeque, partners of the members and the Salvation Army staff. Hans Lenting received the ASB charter to thank him for being a member of the band the last five years.
Emmen Corps Weekend - May 27/28, 2006
On Saturday 27th May 2006, the band was guest at the Emmen Corps. The Weekend started with marches and open airs through the centre. In the evening we had a concert in the big church where the band played pieces like Gaudete by Kevin Norbury and an old time classic Sinfonietta 'The Wayfarer' by Eric Ball. On the Sunday morning the band splitted up in two ensembles so one part of the band was able to provide the small corps Hoogeveen with a brass ensemble as well. In the afternoon the whole band performed at 'De Trans', an house for mentally disordered people. We even had some very fine guest conductors!
Music Festival - April 8, 2006
Saturday 8th April 2006 the Music Festival of the Salvation Army in the Netherlands, which is held every year together with songsters and bands from serveral corps in the Netherlands, the Amsterdam Staff Band and Amsterdam Staff Songsters, took again place at 'Muziekcentrum Vredenburg' in Utecht. Special guests this year were euphonium soloist David Childs and Majory Watson from Regent Hall Corps, London, UK. One of the large works the ASB performed was Odyssey, a test piece written for the European Brass Band Championships in 1997.
Corps Weekend The Hague - February, 2006
In the weekend of February 25 and 26, 2006, the Amsterdam Staff Band was guest at the The Hague Congress Hall. The started with an open air concert on the Saturday afternoon and in the evening a concert. On Sunday, after the monring meeting, the band has given another open air concert at the beach of Scheveningen.
Music Leaders Day - January, 2006
The Music Leaders Day is organized every year to help Salvation Army music leaders in the Netherlands improve their conducting of their own home corps band and/or songsters. On January 28, 2006 the Music Leaders Day 2006 was held in the Regenboogkerk in Hilversum. Guests this year were orchestra conductor Jurjen Hempel and Darren Barlett who singswith the International Staff Songsters of the Salvation Army in the United Kingdom. The day ended with a welcome concert of the new bandmaster of the Amsterdam Staff Band, Thijs Musch.
Farewell Concert Howard Evans - November, 2005
On November 26, 2005 a farewell concert has been organized to say 'Thank you!' to Howard Evans on an appropriate way. In the afternoon and evening there was a buffet and concluding the evening with a concert. The band is very pleased about time they have spend with Howard in the last five-and-an-half years.
Corps weekend at Kampen - October, 2005
In the weekend of October 29/30 the ASB was guest at the corps Kampen corps weekend. In Oldenbroek, a place close to Kampen, a new church has been started about a year ago. The Salvation Army Corps has offered a concert by the Amsterdam Staff Band as a gift for the opening the chuch, called 'Luctor et Emergo'.
United Kingdom Tour 2005 - June 6-12, 2005
On June 6 the band went on tour to the United Kingdom. The highlight for the members of the Amsterdam Staff Band was the Festival at the Royal Albert Hall in London, this year called Sounds of Praise. This Festival was held on Saturday June 11.
Amongst former short visits to the UK some years ago, this visit was one of the highlights of the ASB-bandmastership of bandmaster Howard Evans.
ASB in Winterswijk & Enschede - April 23/24, 2005
On Saturday April 23 the ASB performed in Winterswijk starting off with a march and an open air concert. On the Sunday the band played at the Enschede coprs with a concert in the afternoon.
Weekend in Harlingen March 26/27, 2005
This weekend the Amsterdam Staff Band was guest at the Harlingen Salvation Army corps. Special guest this weekend was euphonium player David Childs from the UK who did a brass workshop on the Saturday afternoon.
Concert in Hattem February 26, 2005
On Saturday 26th of February the ASB was guest on a concert in the "De Open Poort" in Hattem celebrating the 70 years existence of the "D.E.V" male choir.
Music Leaders Day 2005
The Music Leaders Day is organized every year to help Salvation Army musicleaders in the Netherlands improve their conducting of their own home corps band and/or songsters. This year it was held at the National Headquarters of the Salvation Army in the Netherlands. Special guests for doing the workshops this weekend were Jan Schut, former ASB bandsmen Thijs Musch and Andre Vulperhorst and Annika Scut from the United Kingdom.
Premier Brass 2004
"Premier Brass 2004" has been held in Schoonhoven this year toghether with Brass Band Schoonhoven. Again this concert was a great succes! Special guest was euphonium soloist and Willson artist Robin Taylor. Robin is euphonium player of the Royal Air Force Band in England and a member of the English Northern Philharmonica Orchestra.
April 2004: Waterweg Centraal Corps
Weekend
Again a superb weekend! This month the band was guest at the Waterweg
Centraal corps weekend. During this weekend we had a special cornet soloist.
Sixtheen-year-old Philip Cobb, son of Stephen Cobb the bandmaster of the International
Staff Band. At the moment Philip is styding at college and will go to the conservatory
next year. Philip, at his young age, is a true virtuoso on the cornet. At the age of
fiveteen he has even been principal of the National Youth Brass Band in the United
Kingdom.
March 2004: ASB 'on' Urk...
This month the ASB got invited by the Christian brass band Valerius from
Urk. The ASB members discovered that the people 'on' Urk were very friendly and got
welcomed very warmly with a traditional dinner: fish and rice. We say 'on' Urk on purpose
since Urk is one of the few places in the Netherlands where you actually live 'ON' instead
of 'in'. Yes,... it took some time for some members to get used to. In the afternoon the
bands had a massed rehearsal with the aim to get to know each other and for brass band
Valerius to play new music. On the evening the ASB had a massed concert with a Christian
male choir from Urk wearing their a traditional outfit; probably one of the best male
choirs the ASB has ever performed with. Everyone was sure a day like this should be
organized again soon!
February 2004: CD Recording featuring
David Childs
At the end of February the Amsterdam Staff Band will record a new CD
featuring the young euphonium player David Childs. More information about the recording
will follow soon. David Childs was awarded the title International Euphonium Player
of the Year at the age of eighteen. During the same period he became the only
euphonium soloist ever to win the brass final of the classical BBC Young Musician of
the Year competition and was also awarded a silver medal from the Worshipful Company
of Musicians.

leaders in the Netherlands improve their conducting of their own home corps band and/or
songsters. Special guests for doing the workshops this weekend were former ASB bandsman
and free-lance tuba player Andre Vulperhorst and Jan Schut former trumpet player of the
Dutch Royal Militairy Band son of the well known Dutch Salvationist Berend Schut.
Stadskanaal Corps Weekend 2003
On 29th Novermber the Amsterdam Staff
Band has performed with cornet virtuoso Roger Webster who is the principal cornet of the
Black Dyke Band. The concert was held in the Vennekerk in Winschoten. Entrance was free
so... a shame if you missed it!
The Hague Congress Hall Corps Weekend 2003
Sadly, we had to cancel the march and the open air concert at the start of the weekend in
Zoetermeer because of bad weather conditions. However we had a march and open air concert
in the centre of The Hague as well as in the new suburb Ypenburg on the Sunday where the
Salvation Army recently started new church work.

The Amsterdam Staff Band weekend of 28th and 29th June was held at
the Rotterdam East Corps which celebrated its 10 years of existence in the new Rotterdam
(East) area. For the concert on the saturday evening two superb guest soloists were
featuring with the ASB. Ivan Meylemans (solo trombone player of the prestigious Royal
Concertgebouworchestra) and Brandt Attema (bass trombone player of the Radio Phiharmonic

Harlingen Corps 2003
"Premier Brass" Concert 2003
On Saturday 27th May the 3rd Premier Brass
concert has been held in the "Open Poort" church in Hattem. This year featuring
the Amsterdam Staff Band with brass band de Wâldsang and a special guest
soloist on saxophone (!), Femke IJlstra. In the previous years the ASB has played with
Brass band Rijnmond and De Bazuin. Also next year in 2004 a Premier
Brass concert has been planned.
Music Festival - Lord of the Dance 2003
On Saturday 10th May 2003 the National Music Festival of the Salvation
Army in the Netherlands, which is held every year together with songsters from serveral
corps in the Netherlands, the Amsterdam Staff Band and Amsterdam Staff Songsters, took
place at the "Vredenburg" Music Centre & Concerthall this year. Special
guests on this event were the Salvation Army Enfield Citadel Band under the batton of
James Williams, Bobby Irvine a professional tenor singer and Salvationist from Scotland
and the dutch Salvation Army dance group with talented young girls and one boy.
Belmont Concert for Retired Officers 2003
On Tuesday 29th April the Amsterdam Staff Band has given a concert for
Retired Officers from all over Europe who were having some kind of reunion at the
Salvation Army Hotel & Congress Centre Belmont in Lunteren.
Goes Corps Weekend 2003
Amsterdam West/Central Corps Weekend
2003
This Amsterdam Staff Band weekend was held at the Amsterdam West and
Central corps. During this weekend we had a special guest from Boscombe, United Kingdom
euphonium player Graham Lawrence. Graham has been the euphonium player of the Boscombe
Corps Band for 30 years and has also been a member of the International Staff Band for 6
years.
Divisional Youth Band Weekend 2003
The Divisional Youth Band Weekend is a yearly organized event held at the
Salvation Army "Hotel & Congress Centre Belmont" in Lunteren to help the
three Divisional Youth Bands in the country extending their repertoire with the help of
the Amsterdam Staff Band and its members.
