January 28, 2006 - Music Leaders Day in Hilversum
When Thijs Musch finished the warming up of the band by playing the
meditation
Sacrement byKenneth Downie...

...he handed over the band to the first participant Peter Krommenhoek
giving him a chance to work with the band on the same piece.

While at the same time Daren Barlett was doing a workshop
choir conducting...

...Marc Potters (on the right) was doing a workshop
contemporary music.

At the end of the morning the ASB splitted up in smaller ensembles
so all participants were able to practice with them.

In the afternoon guest conductor Jurjen Hempel gave participant
Hans van de Hoek
the chance to run trough Eric Ball's 'Resurgam'.
When all participants have had a chance to work with the band...

..he offered many lessons. Most important lessons were:
1. always think at least a beat ahead. Focus on what is coming,
there is nothing you can do
about the past.
2. Often the conducter is doing way too much in terms
of showing beats. Conductors often underestimates the musicians.
Let them take care of the
beats and concentrate on
making music,
but
do not to get
emotional involved as well!

Jurjen Hempel ended the session with a full run through of
'Resurgam'
fully "by heart".
Probably one of the best
performances of the band ever!

During the welcome concert of new bandmaster Thijs Musch the band
played many works including Ray Steadman-Allen's
'The Lord is King!',
'Gaudete' and 'Resurgam'.

Arend Pietersen played the lovely cornet solo 'The Reason'.

During the concert Thijs Musch was officially welcomed as
the
bands new bandmaster. Peter Dalziel, Field Secretary of
The
Salvation Army in the Netherlands, noticed the beautiful way
Thijs Musch was
using his arms, with right giving the beats and with his
left arm the
expression of the music, and referred to the Bible text
about whether the right
hand would know what the left hand was doing.
In this case he was absolutely
sure that both hands knew what they
were doing.
Congratulations Thijs with your appointment!
